You Gotta Build Your House Upon A Rock …

Photo of Red Rock SandWhat Foundation Are You Building Your House On?

Do you remember that song:

“Don’t build your house on the sandy land
Don’t build it too near the shore
Oh it might be kind of nice
But you’ll have to do it twice
And you’ll have to build your house once more
You better build your house upon the rock
And put a sure foundation on the solid spot
And though the storms may come and go
Peace of God you’ll know.”

If that’s too modern for you … think about the song : “The wise man built his house upon a rock … ” :-)

Way back when, when I sang the above songs as a child and teenager, I used to wonder why people would build their houses on the sand when I couldn’t even get my sandcastle to stay standing up.  A few years ago, I decided to go do some research to find out what Jesus was referring to when He talked about people building their house on the sand. Where is Your Treasure?

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  Luke 12:34

How many times have you been “beaten up” with this scripture?  When it’s quoted, it’s often quoted in the negative, indicating hoarding, the fear of giving or, the love of money.

Take a look at that scripture in context though and you will see that what Jesus was doing was protecting our interest.  Jesus was saying to think like God … taking care of those less fortunate than you but then get ready because you have access to ALL that He has in heaven:

“Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupt.” Luke 12: 42

When our desires become His desires and our will, His will, there is no need to hoard out of fear of not having enough … there will never been a winter too harsh and never a famine too severe that could stop us drawing from Heaven’s resources.

We’ll also have more than enough to give to others out of our abundance.

How To Sharpen Your Copywriting Skills

Whilst I don’t profess to be a word-class copywriter, I have spent a lot of money and a lot of time practicing and writing my own copy.  But, back in 2006, copywriter, Alan Forrest Smith, made me realize that I was a better copywriter than I had given myself credit for. He said something like:

“Copywriting is a communication skill … it’s the art of good conversation”

So, if you can have a good conversation, if you can hold people’s attention whilst speaking with them, you have what it takes to write compelling copy.

But what about if you think you’re not a very good communicator or, people start yawning when you open your mouth to speak … and I’m sure there are only a few of those people in this world … Well, Rich Schefren of Strategic Profits has just the thing to enhance any copy – whether you think you’re already good at writing copy or not. You can either download the PDF by clicking this link, Phrases That Keep Your Reader’s Attention – it’s a downloadable PDF or, better still, head over to Rich Schefren’s blog and download your copy from that page.

What’s In A Word?

I was having a conversation with a friend last week about the anointing and I quoted, “the anointing breaks the yoke.”  My friend quickly corrected me and gently responded, “it’s actually destroys every yoke.”  My response was “is it!”

You see, I’m s stickler for using the correct terminology – especially when quoting scripture – because one word can and does make a big difference.  However, I’ve heard people quoting “it’s the anointing that breaks the yoke” so many times that I had settled for it.

The original text from Isaiah 10:27 says …

And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing

When something in broken, it can usually be fixed.  When you destroy something, there’s no hope of putting it back together again.

Know Your Subject, Know Your Market!

I’m amazed …

I’m amazed by how many people, including Christians, that I speak to who go into business knowing little about their subject and even less about their market.

I’m all for being self-employed and entrepreneurship, and I’m all for praying that God blesses our businesses but, give the Holy Spirit something to work with!

Before you give up your job and start that business, ensure you know enough about your subject that you could relay it to other people.  Know who your competition is so you can position yourself to attract the best clients.  Establish if your business is likely to be seasonal and decide what your strategy will be during those quieter times.

If your business is purely online, this process can be easier but, one of the things I dislike about affiliate marketing is the fact that it’s so easy …. NOT!!

At least, “easy” is the word that most affiliate marketing promoters will use in order to entice people to a) become their affiliate or b) sell them a product all about affiliate marketing.

It’s actually one of the reasons I stopped working with newbies who wanted to focus solely on being an affiliate marketer.  Why?  Most of them try to sell products and services in a market they know little about – either about the subject matter or, the market.  When they fail to sell anything because after a few blog posts, the little knowledge they had dries up, they complain and whinge that Internet Marketing sucks!

Passion Sells?

My other big gripe is the overuse or abuse of a term I’ve used myself in the past and will still use … “passion sells.”

I do however believe that passion sells, but it must be backed up with knowledge!  If you don’t have the knowledge and can’t get the knowledge, no amount of passion is going to make you win in that market – no matter how niche!

Passion Isn’t Enough!

I’ve had clients who are passionate about dating.  Why?  They’re single, have been let down more than a few times and are passionate about helping others.  I could say a lot here, but I’ll refrain and just say, they were passionate but, without knowledge of the dating scene, nothing from the hard work they put into their sites materialised.

One of my original clients who started out on the affiliate marketing tract, initially focused all her efforts, money and time on her passion for dating advice.

Since then, she’s been around the houses with different niches and during a conversation some months ago, I discovered she had a lot of knowledge in a niche that may not be as flattering as dating, but, is lucrative both online and off and, for those people looking for the solution to the pain they’re suffering, it’s real and, they would be willing to pay money for it.

Sorry to tease, but I’m not going to spill regarding what this niche is because I know someone or many will jump on the bandwagon and  ignore the essence of this post.  Also, I want to protect my clients interest. :-)

My only regret for this client is that now they’ve spent all of their money going around the houses, jumping from one niche to the next and trying every marketing tactic going, they have now run out of resources to put into their new business.

Whilst on the surface it may seem okay to be the reporter and not the expert in your market, you have to ensure you have enough passion and zeal to research and report like an expert, so you give your market the best advice to help them make an informed decision that you are the best person to buy from or, to work with.

If  you are after the sale, and you want to give your best knowledge so you look and sound like the expert.

The Bible instructs us to “know” wisdom but, wisdom works only in conjunction with knowledge … of God yes, but God doesn’t lead us to ignorance, He leads us to find.   So, if you don’t have that knowledge to even know what you’re looking for, you need to go and get it.

Abiding In Him

Open Bible“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” John 15:7

Have you ever been a position of not knowing what to ask God for?  You want or need some guidance from the Holy Spirit but you’re not even sure whether what you’re asking for is God’s will?

I’ve been in this situation on too many occasions but I found that this can be the most confusing time of anyones life and, it also causes what I call double minded prayers.

The first thing to remember is that the Bible tells us to “let the peace of God rule in your hearts,” Colossians 3:15.  Peace is something you seriously cannot purchase, no matter how much money you have.  You can purchase the thing that will bring peace such as pay for the new roof to prevent damage to the interior of your home, but when it comes to making a decision on which direction to take or, what to do, no amount of money can guarantee you’ve made the right decision until you see the result of your decision.

However, by abiding in the Word, you will know what to ask for because the Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth and the path that leads to truth is not only a path where wisdom abounds, but, it’s a peaceful one – Proverbs 3:17.

You Can’t Force God’s Hand

When it comes to answers to prayer, you can’t force God’s hand.

If we are asking “what we will,” and we’re abiding in His Word, then we can assume that what we ask for must be in accordance with the Father’s will for our lives too.  Jesus himself said “I do always those things that please him (the Father),” John 8:2.  Worthless though our attempts would be, this actually means that there is no need to try and force God’s hand.

I have personally seen so many criticisms against the “faith movement,” that I’m beginning to challenge the lives of their critics.  I’m certainly not into the “name it, claim it, blab it and grab it group,” but faith isn’t a movement, it’s a way of living. God said that “without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 (emphasis mine).

Before you even get to the place of faith, you have to believe that God is.

What does this mean?  I could blind you with words like omnipotent and omniscient but basically, God is ALL knowing and ALL seeing and ALL Mighty. It means that nothing is too difficult for Him to do and in fact, everything that God is ever going to do for you has already been accomplished.

I hear people saying “but I prayed so hard, I cried, I stormed the heavens and I got nothing and so I don’t believe in this faith thing.”  Well, I want to help you out here and suggest you stop.  Stop the crying, storming and trying to move God’s hands with your prayers … He just won’t be manipulated.

My little girl said it best when she said “mummy, if you’re believing God for this, then why are you crying.”

You know why I was crying?  Because I didn’t believe!  Oh yes, I believed the Word of God, I believed God answered prayer but I was in fear and didn’t really believe that what I’d ask for, God could do it for me!

Believing the Word and acting on the Word, are two different things.

You see, if I had believed, I would have spoken with confidence (acting) – a confidence that can only come from God.  I wouldn’t be crying and storming and pleading with God because I would have had that knowing that whatsoever things I desire when I prayed, believing that I receive them, I would have them.

How could I be so sure I would receive them and what’s the difference between what I’m saying here and the proponents of the “faith movement?”

It comes down to one word, apart from faith … “Abiding.”

Abiding means to “live in.”

Therefore, if I’m “living in” the Word and the Word is living in me, I will build faith since faith comes by hearing and, hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17.

When the Word lives in me, I will also have wisdom to know what to do.  I will also have peace and I will also know that God is, all of which will eliminate any doubt.

My response to my little girl telling me that if I had faith, I wouldn’t be crying was to spend more time in the Word.  Seriously, I put aside all work and fed on the Word until I got the faith to believe.  This put an end to the crying, vein popping praying and the storming of heaven and gave me a peace that passed all understanding.

The bonus?  The more time I spent meditating the Word, the more I got to know about God as my Father and the fact that He just “is” – self existent, God of Faith, God of Love.  My knowing God, eliminated the shadows of doubt as I discovered His heart and the fact that He wanted more for me than I was even willing to ask myself.

So the next time you need an answer to prayer and you realise you’re lacking in faith, do more abiding and in that abiding, you will find love, joy, health and peace.  It really is the Father’s will for you to have it all.

Blessings,

My Content Marketing Predictions for 2011

Over on Joe Pulizzi’s blog, he asks “What is your 2011 Content Marketing or Social Media Prediction?”

I completed the survey form on his site with my predictions for how businesses will use content marketing and social media, and I wanted to share my response with you here.

If they have any sense, I think brand marketers will focus more on what can be done internally to engage your clients externally.

In other words, there will be less outsourcing of their SEO strategy and more quality data gathering internally that can be turned into content and used to ease their clients pain.  Customer services, sales and marketing will all communicate and consolidate questions that both clients and prospects ask frequently .  These questions will be collated and answered in the form of published content and distributed via social media sites.  The era of “What can I sell you,” is going to be replaced with “seriously, what can I do to help you?”

When I refer to published content by the way, I mean editorial, informative and useful information that prospects and clients can implement to make a difference to their lives.

Any advances on these predictions?

How To Stand Out As An Internet Marketer

Fish Going In Opposite DirectionThis is probably going to be one of the most controversial posts that I’ve ever written and, I’ve written some but I’m seeing a pattern online that’s emerging and, I don’t like the clones (not clowns) it’s creating.

I used to work for Direct Line Insurance in the UK and I remember a huge media campaign they ran that required extra people.  What did Direct Line do?  They HIRED an outsource company in addition to asking their existing employees if they wanted some overtime.

It’s true, Direct Line are probably part of a multi billion pound company but, the little corner shop who anticipates extra sales over Christmas advertises for a temporary part time assistant right?

So Why On Earth In Our Business Are Supposedly Multi Millionaires Asking For FULL-TIME Volunteers To Answer The Phones During Their Launch Campaign, For A MONTH!!

Seriously, if you’re striving for the best online, it’s time to do a 180 degree turn and do the direct opposite to your competitors.

“Ouch Trish, that will kill my business!”

It’s probably already dying but you didn’t know it.  You don’t have to manipulate to make sales, you can be upfront about what you’re offering and not stress people out with millions of one-time-offers and, you can set a price-list so that people are aware of your prices.

You can either run a market stall type business where you attract the bargain hunters and expect them to haggle over your prices or, you can be the boutique with your unique offerings and service and charge boutique prices but, attract premium clients.

You determine which you become by the way you structure your business.  If you listen to the majority of the online marketers, you will create a market stall type business and be forever haggling with bargain hunters.

As I said in my previous post, you can’t expect to shop at Harrods and expect to pay Primark prices.

This is different to your usual post on standing out in business, but the rules of attraction are important here and they start with how you perceive yourself and your business.

Until next time,

Make Your Mind Up!

If you track the success of the most successful people on our planet, you will find that they all have one thing in common … they are decision makers.

In his book, “The Success Principles,” Jack Canfield talks about not settling for less than you want.

“When you are confronted with a choice, no matter how small or insignificant, act as if you have a preference.”

Jack Canfield then goes on to say that not being clear about what you want becomes a habit.

Now, there is a spiritual principle at work here that most people would ignore but, the Bible refers to it as being double minded and says that “a double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

Gills Exposition of the Bible puts this in a way that explains it best:

unstable in all his ways; he is confused in his mind; restless in his thoughts, unsettled in his designs and intentions; inconstant in his petitions; uncertain in his notions and opinion of things; and very variable in his actions, and especially in matters of religion; he is always changing, and never at a point, but at a continual uncertainty, both in a way of thinking and doing: he never continues long either in an opinion, or in a practice, but is ever shifting and moving.

I confess, I have been as guilty as charged and I’m sure if you’re reading this, you’ll be able to identify with times when you’ve been indecisive too.  The important thing is to track that pattern of indecision and then ask yourself how much it has cost you in both the short-term and long-term.  It’s hard isn’t it, because there is no scalable ROI but, whether there is or whether there isn’t you are being robbed, by you!

Some of the ways we become double minded in our business include:

  • What line of business to pursue – online, this can be a total brain-drain and resource-drain as you try to decide on your keywords depending on your target market
  • Who you will do business with – whether client or outsource partner, decide what kind of person you work with best and don’t compromise.  I’ve turned down business before (some would say “stupid”) because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to satisfy or help the client in the best way
  • How to broadcast your business – online or offline and which media formats to use.  This one can be hard but, you have to take into account your target market and where they congregate but, the Dr’s surgery is NOT the place to start dropping business cards.  This is called “pray and spray marketing.”
  • What price to set – listen to me … set your price and stick to it!  Make your mind up before you publish it that this is the price.  Everyone won’t be able to afford it, but as my solicitor friend says, “you can’t shop in Harrods and expect to pay Primark prices!”

Listen To Your Heart, Not Your Head

Some years back when I just started out in this business, someone came to me and said he wanted two identical blogs, one for him and the other for his girlfriend since they would be entering a podcast competition.  He stressed I don’t know how many times that these were identical sites and so in other words, he didn’t want to pay the price of two blogs.  I agreed that it would be a little easier and set my price.  And then his blog outline arrived in my inbox and looked nothing like we had agreed.

I wanted to go back and say this project was much bigger than I thought, but I thought it looked unprofessional and, despite my solicitor friend telling me why I should go back and renegotiate the price and, despite restless nights and restless days, I took the contract on.  I also agreed that this client could pay 50% upfront and the remainder after the work is done, something I never do and, I’ll explain this later.

Let me tell you, everything that could go wrong with this project, did go wrong!

I spent weeks on what was about a $900 contract and even talking about it now makes me feel uneasy.  If I had listened to my heart and not my head, I would have re-negitiated the price and insisted on payment upfront.  But I didn’t, I was weak in my approach.

Sticking To Your Decision

This client was one of my mentor’s students and I wanted to impress them both.

However, even my mentor,  who is very well known in the Internet Marketing space, had told me that I needed to charge upfront and why.  He said, “when you buy floor covering, you have to pay for it before the company will deliver and fit it.”  I learnt early on that in addition to that, people can be like kids in a candy store when it comes to building a site – they want everything but still only want to pay the $1.

Well, this client was no different and what was worse, he had only paid me 50% and I wanted my money, so he and his girlfriend ended up with completely different looking blogs and me with a measly $900.  They did become runners up in the podcast competition for the best looking sites, but at what cost to me?

This same client came back to me about a year later and asked me to do a site for a friend of his.  I gave him my price and told him it was payment upfront.  He tried to negotiate hard, moving from offering 50% up to 75% and I said no every time.  As far as I was concerned, he could have offered 98% and I would still have said no.  Why?  Alex Mandossian taught me a lesson that I have had to learn the hard way, because I didn’t listen to him.  He tells all of his students that if someone is trifling over price at the negotiation stage, how difficult will it be to work with them once the contract begins.

I had worked with this client once already and knew how demanding he was and so why would I want to put myself in that position a second time?

Could I have done with the money?  Yes, but I was clear about my intentions and what I wanted and I wasn’t about to be double minded or indecisive.  You give in once, and you’ll always keep giving in and then wonder why you can’t reach the next level in your business and personal life.  You have to stick to your guns!

I don’t have time to expand on it in this post, which is much longer than I wanted it to be, but, in the next few days, I’ll write another article on the spiritual principle of compromise.

Until next time, blessings,
